The Eilenberg-Moore Category and a Beck-type Theorem for a Morita Context

The Eilenberg-Moore constructions and a Beck-type theorem for pairs of monads are described. More specifically, a notion of a Morita context comprising of two monads, two bialgebra functors and two connecting maps is introduced. It is shown that in many cases equivalences between categories of algebras are induced by such Morita contexts. The Eilenberg-Moore category of representations of a Morita context is constructed. This construction allows one to associate two pairs of adjoint functors with right adjoint functors having a common domain or a double adjunction to a Morita context. It is shown that, conversely, every Morita context arises from a double adjunction. The comparison functor between the domain of right adjoint functors in a double adjunction and the Eilenberg-Moore category of the associated Morita context is defined. The sufficient and necessary conditions for this comparison functor to be an equivalence (or for the moritability of a pair of functors with a common domain) are derived.     

Single-photon and three-photon absorption induced whispering-gallery mode lasing in ZnO micronails

The ZnO micronails were synthesized by the vapor phase transport method. The heads of the micronails show hexagonal disk structure which is suitable for the whispering-gallery mode lasing microcavity. Under the excitation of a nanosecond pulse at 355 nm, the single-photon absorption induced lasing was stimulated in the micronail with the head diameter of 3.0 μm, the whispering gallery mode and Fabry-Pérot mode lasing were investigated. Under the excitation of femtosecond laser pulses at 804 nm, the second harmonic generation and the three-photon absorption induced photoluminescence were observed from a bulk of micronails, then an individual micronail with the diameter of 9.1 μm was employed to realize the three-photon absorption induced whispering-gallery mode lasing.     

Noncommutative two-dimensional gauge theories

We elaborate on the dynamics of noncommutative two-dimensional gauge field theories. We consider U(N) gauge theories with fermions in either the fundamental or the adjoint representation. Noncommutativity leads to a rather non-trivial dependence on theta (the noncommutativity parameter) and to a rich dynamics. In particular the mass spectrum of the noncommutative U(1) theory with adjoint matter is similar to that of ordinary (commutative) two-dimensional large-NSU(N) gauge theory with adjoint matter. The noncommutative version of the ?t Hooft model receives a non-trivial contribution to the vacuum polarization starting from three-loops order. As a result the mass spectrum of the noncommutative theory is expected to be different from that of the commutative theory.     

Axial instability of double-nanobeam-systems

This Letter considers the axial instability of double-nanobeam-systems. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity is utilized for modelling the double-nanobeam-systems. The nonlocal theory accounts for the small-scale effects arising at the nanoscale. The small-scale effects substantially influence the instability (or buckling) of double-nanobeam-systems. Results reveal that the small-scale effects are higher with increasing values of nonlocal parameter for the case of in-phase (synchronous) buckling modes than the out-of-phase (asynchronous) buckling modes. The increase of the stiffness of the coupling elastic medium in double-nanobeam-system reduces the small-scale effects during the out-of-phase (asynchronous) buckling modes. Analysis of the scale effects in higher buckling loads of double-nanobeam-system with synchronous and asynchronous modes is also discussed in this Letter. The theoretical development presented herein may serve as a reference for nonlocal theories as applied to the instability analysis of complex-nanobeam-system such as complex carbon nanotube system.     

Harnack inequality and continuity of solutions to quasi-linear degenerate parabolic equations with coefficients from Kato-type classes

For a general class of divergence type quasi-linear degenerate parabolic equations with measurable coefficients and lower order terms from nonlinear Kato-type classes, we prove local boundedness and continuity of solutions, and the intrinsic Harnack inequality for positive solutions.     

Lyapunov conditions for Super Poincaré inequalities

We show how to use Lyapunov functions to obtain functional inequalities which are stronger than Poincaré inequality (for instance logarithmic Sobolev or F-Sobolev). The case of Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities was studied in [D. Bakry, P. Cattiaux, A. Guillin, Rate of convergence for ergodic continuous Markov processes: Lyapunov versus Poincaré, J. Funct. Anal. 254 (3) (2008) 727-759. Available on Mathematics arXiv:math.PR/0703355, 2007]. This approach allows us to recover and extend in a unified way some known criteria in the euclidean case (Bakry and Emery, Wang, Kusuoka and Stroock, …).     

Singular stochastic equations on Hilbert spaces: Harnack inequalities for their transition semigroups

We consider stochastic equations in Hilbert spaces with singular drift in the framework of [G. Da Prato, M. Röckner, Singular dissipative stochastic equations in Hilbert spaces, Probab. Theory Related Fields 124 (2) (2002) 261-303]. We prove a Harnack inequality (in the sense of [F.-Y. Wang, Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities on noncompact Riemannian manifolds, Probab. Theory Related Fields 109 (1997) 417-424]) for its transition semigroup and exploit its consequences. In particular, we prove regularizing and ultraboundedness properties of the transition semigroup as well as that the corresponding Kolmogorov operator has at most one infinitesimally invariant measure μ (satisfying some mild integrability conditions). Finally, we prove existence of such a measure μ for noncontinuous drifts.     

Multiplicity-free representations of symmetric groups

Building on work of Saxl, we classify the multiplicity-free permutation characters of all symmetric groups of degree 66 or more. A corollary is a complete list of the irreducible characters of symmetric groups (again of degree 66 or more) which may appear in a multiplicity-free permutation representation. The multiplicity-free characters in a related family of monomial characters are also classified. We end by investigating a consequence of these results for Specht filtrations of permutation modules defined over fields of prime characteristic.     

Understanding consumer adoption of broadband: an extension of the technology acceptance model

Broadband offers several benefits to consumers over its preceding technology ‘narrowband’. Despite it offering such benefits, many countries are still experiencing low levels of adoption of broadband technology by consumers. This study presents an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) that integrates perceived resources, self-efficacy and social influence into the TAM in order to investigate factors determining consumer adoption of broadband. The model was empirically tested employing data collected from a survey of broadband consumers in the United Kingdom. A regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of predictive constructs on behavioural intention to adopt broadband and actual adoption behaviour. Findings of the study indicated that all variables significantly affected consumers' behavioural intention to adopt broadband. The outcomes of the paper will be useful for the stakeholders such as internet service providers and governments interested in encouraging the adoption of broadband. The implications of this work to both researchers and practitioners is discussed.     

Super and weak Poincaré inequalities for hypoelliptic operators

Sufficient conditions are presented for super/weak Poincare inequalities to hold for a class of hypoelliptic operators on noncompact manifolds. As applications, the essential spectrum and the convergence rate of the associated Markov semigroup are described for Gruschin type operators on R2 and Kohn-Laplacian type operators on the Heisenberg group.
